The Microphone Misfitz – Escape From Babylon Vol 6.

The Microphone Misfitz (composed of breakers, graff artists, a DJ and emcees) have been a touring staple with their high energy, culture driven positivity and approach to music for a long time. Their signature sound riddled with funk, break beats, boom-bap, afro-centric elements and an ongoing comic book series brings us to this review. On Escape from Babylon vol 6 (corresponding to the comic book volume) they show that they can have lyrical prowess, impeach on controversial topics and still rock the party! If you like music by acts such as early Jurassic 5, Freestyle Fellowship, Keynote Speakerz, KRS-One, A Tribe Called Quest, Abstract Rude and others, then this is a group you shouldn’t overlook! Tracks like That Ain’t It!, Act Like Ya’ll Don’t Know, and Weaponized prove they have what it takes to remain a significant part of the culture, displaying both aggressive rhythm and playful skillsets. They aren’t your typical 1 trick “for the culture” ponies either, as The Fitz (a common nickname they have) aren’t afraid to stray into nerdcore pop culture to make standout tracks like Underneath the Surface which samples an iconic 16-bit sample from Sonic the Hedgehog and even brag about their versatility quoting rhymes like “whether conscious, hardcore, nerdcore or street poetry, everything is power and passion in my potency” on tracks like Dare To Listen. This album features guests like Skbb Rok, Chai Tulani, Alfred Banks, It’s Phyre, Shadow Master MC and Femcee Flipsidee and deserve to go in your rotation!
